A Sweet Family Sukhdi Recipe
Today, we’re thrilled to share a very special Sukhdi recipe from one of our wonderful parents, a delicious offering that brings a taste of their heritage into your home. Sukhdi is a traditional Indian sweet, cherished for its comforting simplicity and rich flavour. This recipe speaks to the power of thoughtful preparation and quality ingredients. It’s a wonderful opportunity to involve children in the kitchen, fostering practical life skills and environmental awareness, just as we do with our potting shed and vegetable garden, where children harvest produce for daily meals.
This delightful treat is more than just a dessert; it’s a moment of connection, a taste of culture, and a celebration of community, values we deeply uphold at our Service. We hope you enjoy preparing and sharing Sukhdi with your family, creating new memories around the table and embracing the diverse tapestry of flavours our community brings.
We are belong from Hindu Gujarati family, and when I was a kid, I used to see my mum makes SUKHDI (Gol Papdi) specially in Winter seasons. We really loved it!
Special thanks to Nidhi Mehta, NEEC parent for sharing this family favourite with us all.
I used to make in winter as well. When my kids tried very first time, they loved it and ask about ”One more mumma!” It’s so delicious! I like it!
Sukhdi Recipe – Prep Time 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- Jaggery (gur) 1.5 cups
- Clarified butter (ghee) 1 cup
- Wheat flour (Atta) 1.5 cups
Method:
- Grease a dish to place your prepared Sukhdi into with ghee (bottom and sides)
- Place the Ghee in a pan, setting the heat on low to medium.
- Once the ghee is melted and slightly hot. Add the 1.5 cups of wheat flour into the pan.
- Mix with a spatula. It will be like lumpy paste.
- Continue to stir constantly, toasting the flour for 5-6 minutes or until you can see the colour change; you are looking for a darker colour.
- As soon as the flour is toasted, turn off the stove and then add the Jaggery.
- Quickly mix it. Jaggery will melt right away.
- Pour all the mixture into the greased plate, and let it cool down slightly.
- While it is still warm, you can slice into desired shapes and sizes, like a square or diamond shape.
- You can serve this warm or let it cool down completely, remove the pieces gently and serve.
You can keep it for 3 days as well! Hope you enjoy this easy and yummy recipe! We believe that education extends beyond the classroom, weaving into every facet of a child’s life, including their relationship with food. Our “paddock-to-plate” approach ensures children understand the journey of their meals, fostering an appreciation for fresh, local ingredients and the effort behind every dish.
