Your Family Will Love This Beef And Vegetable Pie
At Sydney Early Education Centres, mealtimes are one of the many small moments where children learn, share and grow together. This month’s recipe comes from Alice, one of our wonderful chefs, she has put together a hearty Beef and Vegetable Pie that’s perfect for family dinners at home. Packed with vegetables and full of flavour, it’s a great way to get children involved in the kitchen while adding in some extra nutrition.
This beef and vegetable pie is a firm favourite in our centre kitchens, and it comes together just as easily at home. Built on a base of beef mince, onion and garlic, then packed out with zucchini and carrot, it’s a filling meal that quietly delivers extra vegetables without anyone noticing. A spoonful of Dijon mustard and tomato paste through the passata gives the filling real depth, and a layer of melted tasty cheese ties it all together under a golden puff pastry lid.
It’s the kind of meal we love serving because it’s comforting, familiar and endlessly adaptable. It has become a real hit with families asking for the recipe at pickup. Best of all, it uses simple pantry ingredients, comes together in under an hour, and is just as good reheated the next day. Give it a go with your family this week.

Beef and Vegetable Pie – Serves 4-6
Ingredients
- 500g beef mince
- 1 onion, diced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 zucchini, grated or finely diced
- 1 carrot, grated
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1–1½ cups passata
- 2 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 cup shredded tasty cheese
- 2 sheets puff pastry
- Oil for cooking
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: egg or milk for brushing pastry
Method
- Heat a little oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the beef mince and cook until browned. Remove the mince from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the onion and garlic and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add the zucchini and carrot and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Return the cooked beef mince to the pan. Stir through the tomato paste and Dijon mustard. Add the passata and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until thickened slightly.
- Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Stir through half of the shredded tasty cheese.
- Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced).
- Line a pie dish with one sheet of puff pastry. Spoon in the beef and vegetable filling. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
- Place the second sheet of puff pastry over the filling. Press edges together with a fork and trim excess pastry. Cut a few small slits in the top. Brush with egg or milk if using.
- Bake for 25–35 minutes or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
Decorating the top of the beef and vegetable pie
This is where family cooking gets fun. Before it goes into the oven, use the pastry trimmings to decorate the top of the pie with little leaves, stars or initials. Children love pressing shapes with a cookie cutter or the tip of a spoon, and it’s a simple way to make dinner feel a little more special. A light brush of egg or milk before baking will help any decorations turn golden along with the rest of the pastry.
We hope this beef and vegetable pie becomes a regular on your dinner table. It’s just one of the recipes our chefs cook up for the children in our care every day. Want to see more of what we serve? You can book a tour at one of our centres; we’d love to show you around.
